Renewing online vs. at the tax collector: which is better?
Updated October 31, 2026 · Leer en español
If your registration has no holds and you want the lowest cost, renewing online through the state's MyDMV Portal or your county tax collector's website is usually the simplest choice. Go to a tax collector office if you need the decal the same day or have a problem to fix in person, use mail if you prefer paying by check, and consider a private service if you want someone to handle it for you and are fine paying a service fee.

The options at a glance
- MyDMV Portal (FLHSMV, online): the state amount plus a small card processing fee; registration mailed in about 7 to 10 business days.
- County tax collector online renewal: many counties have their own portal; card fees vary by county, and some let you pick up the decal at an office the same day (Volusia, if you renew online by 3 p.m.).
- Tax collector office (in person): walk out with your decal, pay with cash or check without card fees; appointments and wait times vary.
- By mail: send the notice or a letter with a check; slowest, but no card fees.
- Private online service (like Tagcenter.net): the state amount plus a service fee shown before you pay; staff complete the renewal and you can follow its status and get support.
The state amount for your vehicle is the same in every option. What changes is the extra fees, the time it takes and the help you get. For the amounts themselves, see what a renewal costs.
Online with the MyDMV Portal
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) runs the MyDMV Portal, its online service for renewing vehicle and vessel registrations. According to the Flagler County tax collector:
- You can renew and also change your mailing or residential address, or get a duplicate registration.
- The registration arrives by mail within 7 to 10 business days.
- You can have a confirmation receipt emailed to you and use it until the registration arrives.
- Credit card payments carry a $2.00 processing fee.
Best for: a routine renewal with no holds, by someone comfortable doing it themselves. Downside: if something blocks the renewal, the portal can't clear it for you, and there is no one assigned to your case.
At a county tax collector office
In Florida, registrations are renewed through the county tax collector, who acts as the state's agent. Going in person gets you the decal the same day, and staff can deal with problems at the counter. To renew in person, Volusia County asks for your license plate number or a state-issued ID and current Florida insurance.
- Appointments: Volusia suggests them and requires them for some services. Polk requires them for driver license and ID services.
- Wait times: they change with the season. Polk County, for example, warned of longer than normal waits in February and March and suggested renewing online, by mail or at a kiosk instead. Some offices, like Flagler's, post wait times on their website.
- Kiosks: some counties have self-service kiosks (in Polk, at certain Publix stores) that print the decal on the spot.
- Payment: cash and checks have no convenience fee; cards do, and the office may add a branch fee of up to 50 cents.
Best for: same-day decals, cash payments and problems that need a person. Downside: travel, waiting and limited office hours.
By mail
Tax collectors also take renewals by mail. Volusia County, for example, lets you mail your payment and receive the registration by mail or pick it up at an office. Without your renewal notice, you call to ask for the amount due and send a letter with the vehicle information, a copy of your current Florida insurance and a check.
Best for: people who prefer paying by check and aren't in a hurry. Downside: it is the slowest option, so mail it well before your birthday.
A private online service like Tagcenter.net
Tagcenter.net is a private company, not FLHSMV or a tax collector. You enter your plate and date of birth, we check whether the registration can be renewed and show you the total before you pay: the state amount plus our service fee, which is listed on our fees page. Our staff then complete the renewal and your decal is mailed to you; you can follow the status online.
- Pros: a plain answer on whether you can renew, a person who handles the renewal, a status page until the decal is mailed, and help if something goes wrong.
- Cons: you pay a service fee that the state options don't charge, and the decal still comes by mail.
- What we can't do: clear insurance or toll holds, or renew a plate that isn't due yet. Those have to be fixed first, whichever option you use.
If you are comfortable with the MyDMV Portal and nothing is blocking your renewal, going direct is the cheapest route, and that's fine. A private service makes sense when you value the help and the follow-up more than the fee.
First check for holds, whichever option you choose
Hillsborough County warns that you can't renew online if your notice shows insurance needed, customer or registration stops, or toll-related holds. Among the plates checked through Tagcenter.net in the last year, the most common blocks were insurance (about 420 plates), a registration expired too long (about 130), unpaid tolls (about 120) and a plate not assigned to the owner (about 85).
Fix the hold first: see insurance holds and toll holds. Then check your plate again.

Frequent questions
Is it cheaper to renew online or at the tax collector?
The state amount is the same. Online you usually pay a small card or processing fee; in person, cash or check avoids it, but you may pay a branch fee of up to 50 cents. See renewal costs.
How long does the decal take to arrive if I renew online?
With the MyDMV Portal, the registration arrives by mail in about 7 to 10 business days, and you can keep the emailed receipt until then. At an office, you get it the same day.
Do I need an appointment to renew at the tax collector?
It depends on the county. Some suggest appointments for vehicle services and require them for others, so check your county tax collector's website first.
Is Tagcenter.net the official Florida DMV website?
No. Tagcenter.net is a private service not affiliated with FLHSMV or any tax collector. We charge a service fee, shown before you pay, to handle the renewal for you.
