How much it costs to renew a Florida registration

Updated October 31, 2026 · Leer en español

For a privately owned car, a 1-year Florida renewal costs $28.10, $36.10 or $46.10 depending on the vehicle's weight. Pickups, motorcycles, heavy trucks and mobile homes have their own amounts, and on top of that you may pay a small mail fee, a card or online processing fee, or a private service fee if you use one.

The state amounts for a 1-year renewal

Renewal amounts are set by Florida law, so the state amount is the same whichever county you live in. These are the totals that the Hillsborough and Pinellas county tax collectors publish for privately owned vehicles:

  • Car, under 2,500 lbs: $28.10
  • Car, 2,500 to 3,499 lbs: $36.10
  • Car, 3,500 lbs or more: $46.10
  • Pickup or van, under 2,000 lbs: $28.10
  • Pickup or van, 2,000 to 3,000 lbs: $36.10
  • Pickup or van, over 3,000 up to 5,000 lbs: $46.10
  • Motorcycle: $24.60 · Moped: $19.60
  • Antique car or truck: $21.10
  • Motor home: $39.10 under 4,500 lbs, $59.35 at 4,500 lbs or more

The weight that counts for cars and pickups is the vehicle's net (empty) weight. Hillsborough County gives examples: a Toyota Yaris or Honda Civic in the lowest bracket, a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord in the middle one, a Dodge Charger or Nissan Maxima in the top one, and pickups like the Ford F-150 or Toyota Tacoma in the top truck bracket. Your renewal notice shows the exact amount.

Leased vehicles are priced differently (also by weight), and a specialty plate adds an annual use fee set by law, often $25. Expect a higher total in either case.

Heavy trucks and mobile homes

Trucks over 5,000 lbs are priced by gross vehicle weight (GVW). A few examples from Hillsborough County's fee list:

  • GVW 5,001 to 5,999 lbs: $72.85
  • GVW 6,000 to 7,999 lbs: $99.85
  • GVW 8,000 to 9,999 lbs: $115.10
  • GVW 10,000 to 14,999 lbs: $140.10
  • GVW 26,001 to 34,999 lbs: $346.10
  • GVW 72,000 lbs or more: $1,344.10

Mobile homes are priced by length: $26.60 up to 35 feet, rising in $5 steps to $56.60 for 61 to 65 feet, and $86.60 for 66 feet and up (Pinellas County's fee schedule). For company vehicles and fleets, see business and fleet renewals.

Why the law lists lower numbers

If you read section 320.08 of the Florida Statutes you will see smaller figures, such as $14.50, $22.50 and $32.50 for cars. That is only the base license tax. Section 320.07 says a renewal also pays the service charges in section 320.04 and other fees required by law, and the totals above already include them. When you compare prices, compare totals.

Fees that depend on how you renew

  • Branch fee: the law lets a tax collector add up to 50 cents for a transaction made at a branch office.
  • Mail fee: if your decal is mailed to you, Hillsborough County charges $1.00. A new license plate mailed costs $8.45.
  • Card and online fees: paying by card usually adds a convenience fee charged by the payment vendor. In Volusia County, for example, online renewals cost $3.15 extra by debit or credit card and $1.50 by e-check; in the office, debit cards add $2.65 and credit cards 2.6%. Tax collectors say they don't keep any of these fees.
  • MyDMV Portal: the state's online renewal adds a $2.00 processing fee for credit card payments, according to the Flagler County tax collector.

Cash, checks and money orders paid at a tax collector office generally avoid the convenience fee. Compare the options in renewing online vs. at the tax collector.

Late fees

If you renew late, section 320.07 adds a delinquent fee starting on the 11th day of the month after your renewal period. It is based on the vehicle's license tax: $5 when the tax is $25 or less, $10 up to $50, $15 up to $100, $50 up to $400, $100 up to $600 and $250 above that.

For most cars and pickups that means $5 or $10, but driving with an expired registration can also get you a ticket. See what to do with an expired registration.

Private services: the state amount plus a service fee

Private tag agencies and online renewal services charge their own fee for their work, on top of the state amount. Florida law requires privately owned license plate agents to itemize and disclose their extra service charges, and any private service should show you the full total before you pay.

Tagcenter.net is a private online service, not affiliated with FLHSMV or any tax collector. When you check your plate, we show the state amount for your vehicle and our service fee separately before you pay; our fees are listed on the fees page. What you get for that fee: renewal from your phone, staff who complete it for you, your decal mailed to you, a page to follow the status of the renewal, and help if something goes wrong.

No one, including Tagcenter.net, can renew a registration with an insurance or toll hold until the hold is cleared. Clear it first, then check your plate again.

Frequent questions

How much is a Florida tag renewal for a regular car?

$28.10 under 2,500 lbs, $36.10 from 2,500 to 3,499 lbs, and $46.10 at 3,500 lbs or more, for a 1-year renewal of a privately owned car. Mail, card or service fees are extra.

Is it cheaper to renew at the tax collector office?

The state amount is the same everywhere. Paying in person with cash or check avoids card fees, but you may pay a branch fee of up to 50 cents, plus your time. Online options add a small card or processing fee.

What is the late fee for an expired Florida registration?

It depends on the vehicle's license tax and goes from $5 to $250. For most cars it is $5 or $10, applied from the 11th day of the month after the renewal period.

Why does a private service cost more than the state?

Because it adds a service fee for doing the renewal for you. The state amount doesn't change. Tagcenter.net shows both amounts before you pay; see our fees.
