Registration Renewal for Business and Fleet Vehicles in Florida

Updated October 31, 2026 · Leer en español

Vehicles titled to a company don't renew on anyone's birthday. In Florida, cars and light trucks owned by a business generally expire in June, while heavier trucks renew in December. Companies with 100 or more vehicles can join FLHSMV's Fleet Registration Program; everyone else renews vehicle by vehicle, which is where keeping all your plates in one place saves real time.

When do business-owned vehicles expire?

For individuals, Florida ties the registration to the first owner's birth month. A company has no birthday, so section 320.055 of the Florida Statutes sets other periods:

  • Cars and light trucks owned by a business: a registration period from June 1 to May 31, with the renewal period starting June 1. County tax collectors such as Marion County describe company-owned and short-term lease vehicles as expiring in June.
  • Heavier trucks: renewed in December. Marion County lists business trucks from 5,001 to 7,999 pounds, trucks over 8,000 pounds, truck-tractors and semitrailers in this group. Non-apportioned heavy trucks have a December 1 to November 30 period.
  • Apportioned (IRP) vehicles that travel between states: 12-month periods that start in a month assigned by FLHSMV.
  • Long-term leased vehicles: spread across the year rather than all in June.

The exact date is printed on each registration certificate. The simplest way to stay ahead is one list with every plate and its expiration date.

Renewing late adds a delinquent fee that grows with the vehicle's license tax, which adds up quickly across several trucks. See expired registration in Florida for how late renewals work.

FLHSMV's Fleet Registration Program

Florida has a dedicated program for large fleets, created by section 320.0657 of the Florida Statutes and run by FLHSMV through the county tax collectors. As FLHSMV describes it:

  • Eligibility: at least 100 vehicles, or at least 25 trailers or semitrailers, owned or leased by the company and used for business. Apportioned vehicles and short-term rental vehicles can't join.
  • Plates: permanent light-green plates with "FLEET" at the bottom. There are no annual decals and no individual registration certificates; one receipt covers the whole fleet.
  • Fees: the regular registration taxes plus a $2 annual fleet management fee per vehicle, a one-time $1.50 plate manufacturing fee, and a $10 issuance fee for each vehicle added later.
  • Identification: every fleet vehicle must display the company name or logo and a unit number.
  • Expiration: fleet registrations expire in June or December, depending on vehicle weight.

To join, the company applies through its county tax collector with a list of its vehicles and its FEIN, at least 90 days before the current registrations expire. Renewal information is due at least 60 days before expiration. Each year the company must reconcile its vehicles and return unassigned plates; not complying can bring fines of up to $1,000 per occurrence or removal from the program. FLHSMV also notes that it does not send renewal notices to fleet companies.

Once a company is enrolled, its fleet renewals go through the tax collector office it applied with.

Smaller fleets: renewing vehicle by vehicle

Most businesses, such as contractors, landscapers, delivery services or real estate offices, have far fewer than 100 vehicles. Their registrations are renewed one at a time like any other vehicle, and some counties offer extra help for volume: Seminole County asks customers with ten or more renewals to contact its office to make arrangements, and Hillsborough County runs a fleet program for customers with 25 or more vehicles.

For each vehicle you will need:

  • The plate number and its expiration date.
  • Valid Florida insurance on that vehicle.
  • A record without holds. Unpaid tolls are common on work vehicles; see toll holds and insurance holds.
  • For any form that must be signed for the company, a person authorized to sign for the business. FLHSMV accepts the officer listing on Sunbiz or a letter on company letterhead signed by an officer. More on signatures in renewing for someone else.

Online plate checks built around a personal date of birth often don't work for company vehicles. Among the plates checked through Tagcenter.net in the last year, about 30% returned "no record found", and a vehicle titled to a business is one of the usual reasons.

How Tagcenter.net helps businesses

Tagcenter.net is a private online service, not a government agency, that renews Florida registrations, including vehicles owned by companies. For a business, that means:

  • Time saved: no office trips or lines for each vehicle. Our staff completes the renewal and the new decal is mailed to you, and you can follow the status of each renewal online.
  • One place for all your vehicles: send us your plates once instead of renewing each one separately.
  • Email reminders before each vehicle's registration expires, so a June deadline doesn't catch you with ten trucks to renew in the same week.

If you have several vehicles, send us your list of plates. We'll check each one and tell you which can be renewed now and which have a hold to clear first. Our service fee is shown before you pay (fees). For a general overview of every renewal option, see the complete Florida renewal guide.

Tagcenter.net renews registrations. Joining the FLHSMV Fleet Registration Program, ordering fleet plates and title work are handled by your county tax collector.

Frequent questions

When does a company car registration expire in Florida?

Cars and light trucks owned by a business generally renew in June. Heavier trucks renew in December, and apportioned trucks follow a period assigned by FLHSMV. Check each registration certificate for the exact date.

Do we have to join the fleet program?

No. It is optional and only open to companies with at least 100 vehicles, or 25 trailers or semitrailers. Smaller fleets renew each vehicle the usual way.

Who can sign for our company?

When a form must be signed on the company's behalf, FLHSMV asks for proof that the person is authorized, such as the officer listing on Sunbiz or a letter on company letterhead signed by an officer other than the person signing.

Why does the plate check say "no record found" for our truck?

Online checks usually match a plate with an owner's date of birth, and a company doesn't have one. Send us the plate and we'll look it up.

Does Tagcenter.net send reminders for every vehicle?

Yes. After we renew a vehicle, we email a reminder before its next expiration, so each plate has its own reminder.
