How to renew a Florida registration from out of state
Updated October 31, 2026 · Leer en español
Yes, you can renew a Florida vehicle registration while you're in another state. If you're still a Florida resident and the vehicle has Florida insurance on file, you can renew online from anywhere, and the registration and decal are mailed to the mailing address on your record. Active-duty military have extra options, including an insurance exemption.

Who can renew from out of state
Snowbirds who spend summers up north, college students, travelers and service members stationed elsewhere often renew from out of state. What matters is not where you are that day, but whether the vehicle stays registered in Florida:
- Florida law asks for the street address of your permanent Florida residence (or Florida place of business) on the registration. Active-duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces who are Florida residents are exempt from that requirement.
- The vehicle must keep Florida insurance for the whole registration period, even while it is out of state (military members can use an exemption, below).
- There must be no holds on the plate or your license, such as unpaid tolls or an insurance problem.
If you have moved for good and become a resident of another state, renewing in Florida is usually not the answer: check the new state's rules for registering your vehicle there (see the last section).
Insurance: keep your Florida policy while you are away
Section 627.733 of the Florida Statutes requires the owner of a vehicle registered in Florida to keep the required coverage continuously throughout the registration period. For a car, tax collectors list at least $10,000 of personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 of property damage liability, from a policy valid in Florida. Online renewal needs that insurance on file with the state.
If you cancel or let the Florida policy lapse while you are away, the state can suspend your registration and driver license, and getting them back costs a reinstatement fee of $150 the first time, $250 the second and $500 after that within three years (section 324.0221).
Among the plates checked through Tagcenter.net in the last year, insurance was the most common problem blocking a renewal (about 420 plates). If your plate shows an insurance hold, see how to clear a registration insurance hold. Tagcenter.net can't remove the hold: you fix it with your insurer, then check your plate again.
Getting the decal mailed to an out-of-state address
When you renew online, the registration and decal are normally mailed to the mailing address on your vehicle record, so check it before you pay. A mailing address can be different from your permanent residence, so you can keep your Florida residence on file and receive mail somewhere else.
- Check the mailing address on your current registration or renewal notice.
- If you need it sent elsewhere, ask your county tax collector to update the mailing address before you renew. Florida law requires owners to report an address change within 30 days; many offices take it by mail or in person, with a copy of your ID and the vehicle details.
- Renew once the change has gone through, and allow extra time: county offices estimate 7 to 10 business days for mailed registrations within Florida.
With Tagcenter.net, the decal is also mailed to the address on your vehicle record, and you can follow the status of the renewal online. We cannot change that address for you, so update it with the tax collector first if needed.
Military members stationed outside Florida
Florida residents on active duty outside the state get a few specific accommodations:
- Insurance exemption: you may insure the vehicle in the state where you are stationed instead of in Florida, by completing a Military Insurance Affidavit. Tax collectors ask for your out-of-state address, proof of your current assignment (orders or military ID), a statement that the vehicle is kept in that state and not driven in Florida except as a visitor, and proof of the out-of-state insurance. It does not cover a vehicle registered only to a non-military spouse or dependent, and a vehicle kept in Florida still needs Florida insurance.
- Address: active-duty Florida residents do not have to give a Florida street address on the registration.
- Late fees: if the registration expired while you served on active duty 35 miles or more from your home of record, you can renew without the delinquent fee when you return, with your orders or a letter from your commanding officer.
- Help at home: a family member or friend can handle the renewal for you with a power of attorney (form HSMV 82053).
Renewals using the military insurance exemption are generally done by mail with your county tax collector, since online renewal relies on Florida insurance on file. Check your county's military page for its packet.

Moving out of Florida for good
If you register the vehicle in your new state, turn in your Florida plate to a tax collector office (many accept it by mail with an affidavit) before canceling your Florida insurance. Tax collectors recommend this order because canceling first can trigger a suspension and reinstatement fees.
